Upcycled flatware by Spoonelicious Flatwear
Good afternoon everybody!
Today I have for you something special and I promise you won’t find anything like this at your local shoping center. Stylish, charming, have own beauty and magic – those three words describe best items Spoonelicious Flatwear is creating.
Melody and her husband Bill breathe second life into Silver-plate and Stainless Steel Flatware and find great joy in creating an original spoon rings, bracelets or key rings of them. Jewelry which has its own story and soul, reminiscent me of my grandma’s delicious tomato soup and which is eco-friendly as well.
The whole idea of reusing flatware isn’t new. It actually comes from England of 1600's. where Servants who could not afford silver or other precious metals, stole the flatware from the masters house and crafted their own engagement rings. Spoonelicious Flatwear have of course other ways to get material they need to make jewelry.
They find them in antique stores, estate sales, auctions, on eBay or simply getting from friends. I talked with Melody and asked her to tell more about her works and the whole adventure with upcycle flatware.
Second Life Of Things: Could you please tell me more about your name “Spoonelicious Flatwear” Where the idea comes from?
Spoonelicious Flatwear: It comes from Spoon and Delicious put together, and Flatwear... Instead of the correct spelling, flatware.... Because you wear our deliciously beautiful spoon jewelry!
SLoT: How did start your adventure with upcycling jewelry?
SF: I have always been interested in auctions, and vintage items!
Well in 2011, I went to an auction a couple miles from my home with my father. At the auction, my dad bought a box of very old, ornate silverware. A few days go by, and it is the beginning of December, living on a tight budget, I was trying to figure out what I could make for Christmas gifts, and possibly make some extra money. That is when the, Ah Ha Moment happened!! SPOON RINGS!!! We will make spoon rings with the remaining silverware my dad bought! You see, my dad used to make spoon rings in the 70's, I called him up and asked him where the spoon ring maker was? He laughed, saying what do you want that thing for? Then I told him my idea, I said you need to teach my husband how to make a spoon ring, and we want all of that left over silverware! So the two of them brought it up from the basement, where it has been for the last 30+ years, cleaned it up, and in a couple days, we were in the spoon ring making business. I posted pictures and our first "batch" we sold at an introductory price of just $5.00, as that is the price my dad sold them for years ago! They sold out in a few days! The more people that were wearing our rings, the more in demand our rings became!
SLoT: Is it what you always wanted to do in your life? Did you have other plans for future?
SF: I have always had a passion for art, from painting murals, to crafting, drawing, and creating unique things.
SLoT: Is it your only occupation? Do you do other things for living as well?
SF: I am a substitute teacher, I teach grades K-12, and I have been with the same corporation for 16 years. My husband works for a food service /catering business.
SLoT: Where do you find your inspiration?
SF: Everywhere, antique stores, Pinterest, Facebook, magazines. But most of all, I often dream about products I have yet to create. I find myself waking up and drawing out what I saw in my dream.
SLoT: What kind of materials do you use?
SF: Old silverware, leather, vintage items, old fabric, broken jewelry, buttons, and whatch amacallits!
SLoT: What thin your friends about your pieces?
SF: My friends have been very supportive! Many wear our jewelry daily, or have a piece or two in their collection.
SLoT: What upcycling means for you?
SF: It means breathing new life into items that are usually discarded into the trash or stashed in a drawer somewhere. We love repurposing someone's grandmother's silverware into something they can wear and treasure, and be reminded of their loved ones daily, instead of when they drag out the box of silverware to polish once a year.
SLoT: Tell one funny/interesting/scary story connected with your works or customers?
SF: My favorite story is about a lovely lady who had bought a ring from us that she loved so much. Well she was out on a 1st date, and loved the pattern on a spoon at the restaurant they were dining..she mentioned it to her date, he asked the waiter if he could purchase the spoon, the waiter declined, but said to just take it! So her date tipped the waiter generously for his kindness....as the story continues....her "date" contacted us and wanted to have an engagement ring made from THAT spoon! He purposed to her with THAT ring! She said yes! Great love story, but it continues....
Later we are contacted again, another spoon from that restaurant, this time for a desire for us to make a wedding band for him!!! We congratulated the happy couple and give him his ring as a wedding gift! :)
SLoT: How do you call yourself?
SF: I often say, I created this or designed this...I have called myself Artist/Designer.

Spoonelicious Flatwear maja oczywiscie inne juz metody pozyskiwania potrzebnych materialow. Znajduja je w sklepach z antykami, aukcjach, eBay czy po prostu dostaja od znajomych. SF: Nazwa pochodzi od polaczenia slowa spoon (pol. lyzka przyp. red.) oraz delicious (pol. pyszny przyp.red.) oraz flatwear zamiast poprawnej pisowni flatware (pol. sztucce przyp.red)

SLoT: rozpoczela sie Twoja przygoda zupcyclingowana bizuteria?
SF: bylam zainteresowana aukcjami i przedmiotami vintage! I tak pewnego dnia w 2011 roku poszlam na taka aukcje razem z moim ojcem. Tak kupilismy opakowanie bardzo starych srebrnych sztuccow z pieknymi ornamentami. kilka dni pozniej, na poczatku grudnia, z powoda okrojonego budzetu, zastanawialam sie nad pomyslami na prezenty wigilijne i przy okazji troche dorobic. Wlasnie wtedy wpadlam na genialny pomsyl robienia pierscionkow z lyzek, wykorzystujac kupione przez mojego ojca sztucce. Dawniej moj tato sam zajmowal sie robieniem takiej bizuterii. Poprosilam go, zeby nauczyl mojego meza jak to sie robi. Wiec moj ojciec przyniosl z piwnicy caly potrzebny sprzet, ktory znajdowal sie tam od ponad 30 lat i tak oto kilka dni pozniej siedzielismy w lyzkowym biznesie po uszy. Pierwszy nasz wyrob sprzedalismy za cene 5$ czyli dokladnie tyle, za ile swoja bizuterie sprzedawal moj ojciec. Wszystko rozeszlo sie kilka dni! Im wiecej ludzi nosilo nasza bizuterie, tym wiecej osob chcialo tez taka miec.
SLoT: tym zawsze chcialas sie zajmowac czy moze mialas inne plany na pszyszlosc?
SF: bylam zafascynowana sztuka od malowania murali poprzez rysowanie czy tworzenie unikatowych przedmiotow.
SLoT: jest to Twoja jednyna praca?
SF: Pracuje jako zastepczy nauczyciel i pracuje dla tej samej firmy 12 lat. Moj maz oprocz lyzkowego biznesu pracuje w cateringu.
SLoT: czerpiesz inspiracje?
SF: Praktycznie z kazdego mozliwego zrodla: antyki, sklepy, facebook, pinterest czy czasopisma. Natomiast zdecydowanie najczescie pomysly przychodza do mnie same we snie. Po przebudzenia rysuje to co mi sie przysnilo.
SLoT: rodzaju materialow uzywasz?
SF: Stare srebrne sztucce, skora, staromodne przedmioty, stare tkaniny, zepsuta bizuteria, guziki, czesci od zegarkow.
SLoT: Co na temat Twoich prac mysla znajomi?
SF: Moi znajomi zawsze mnie bardzo wspierali. Wielu z nich nosi codziennie nasza bizuterie albo przynajmneij maja jeden lub dwa przedmioty w swojej kolekcji.
SLoT: Co dla Ciebie oznacza upcycling?
SF: Oznacza tchniecie nowego zycia w niepotrzebne przedmioty. Uwielbiamy ”ozywianie” srebrnych sztuccow czyjejs babci w cos co mozna nosic i doceniac. Takie przedmioty przypominaja o naszych bliskich codziennie zamiast lezec w szufladzie i byc polerowanym raz do roku.
SLoT: jakas ciekawa historie zwiazana z Wasza praca?
SF: Moja ulubiona historia dotyczny pewnej wspanialej kobiety, ktora kupila od nas pierscionek, ktory uwielbiala. Kiedy byla na swojej pierwszej randce ze swoim ukochanym bardzo jej sie spodobal wzor na lyzce z restauracji, w ktorej jedli. Zapytala kelnera czy mogla by ja odkupic, na co ten odparl tylko, ze moze ja zatrzymac. Jej ukochany skontaktowal sie z nami, zeby z tej wlasnie lyzki wykonac pierscionek zareczynowy dla jego wybranki. Oswiadczyl sie jej tym pierscionkiem a ona sie zgodzila. Coz za wspaniala historia milosna, nieprawdaz? Jednak to jeszcze nie koniec. Za jakis czas zakochana para skontaktowala sie z nami, zebysmy wykonali dla niego slubna obraczke z nowej lyzki z tej samej restauracji. Cala historia tak nam sie spodobala, ze obroczke wreczylismy jakos prezent slubny.
Melody odebralam jako bardzo ciepla i pozytwyna osobe. Taka sama energia promieniuje wrecz ze wszystkich przedmiotow jakie Spoonelicious Flatwear tworza. Jezeli uwielbiasz lyzkowe pierscionki, oryginalne bransoletki czy staromodne przedmioty to bedziesz sie tu czul jak w domu. O jednym tylko trzeba pamietac. Lepiej miec oko na swoja zastawe stolowa jak sie zaprasza Melody i Billa na kolacje ;)
